Remote Sensing and GIS Data Science Analyst

General Summary

Anew seeks a dedicated GIS professional to assist the forest carbon geospatial team through every stage of carbon project evaluation, execution, verification, and monitoring. The successful candidate will have the geospatial skills available to assist in designing spatial models, processing, and storing spatial data, and researching new and current spatial tools and processes. Day-to-day responsibilities will cover a broad spectrum of activities including spatial data processing, database management, spatial mapping, designing forest inventory stratification, aerial monitoring of large forested areas, and Lidar analyses to estimate carbon biomass at a landscape scale. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional seeking a dynamic position in the center of the forest carbon market.

  • Specify remote sensing models to classify forest types 
  • Support mapping and remote sensing efforts for forest carbon offset projects  
  • Collect and synthesize data related to ongoing and planned forest carbon projects  
  • Support modeling of forest carbon projects using both GIS and R  
  • Perform statistical analyses and GIS database management of forest inventories  
  • Draft carbon project modeling documentation  
  • Maintain project timelines and meet strict deadlines  
  • Less than 10% travel is required, primarily to team events and/or conferences

Required Education, Experience and Certification

  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or Business Administration 
  • Successful project/task management, note-taking, and organizational track record 
  • Attention to detail is a must  
  • Solid skills and proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint 
  • Data analysis/visualization experience is highly preferred   
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific data and technical information in layman's terms

Preferred Education, Qualifications & Experience  

Master’s or PhD degree in natural sciences More than 2 years of experience in a forestry- or natural science related occupation Advanced proficiency using Lidar, IFSAR, and other datasets  Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel Familiarity with voluntary/compliance forest carbon protocols in North America Experience using databases, including experience using SQL (Structured Query Language) to query databases, analyze data, and create reports Strong interest in climate change and environmental issues
