Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) announced today that  Anew , a marketer and originator of sustainable solutions, has achieved the first-ever  Green-e ® Renewable Fuels certification for its new Anew-RFC product. The Renewable Fuel Certificates (RFCs) used in Anew-RFC are sourced from biomethane (also known as renewable natural gas, or RNG) projects that prevent the harmful emission of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Anew-RFC provides a solution for commercial and industrial customers seeking access to fuels with lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions than the fossil fuels they displace.

Anew was formed from the February 2022 merger of  Element Markets and Bluesource, creating one of the largest climate solutions companies in North America and leveraging the combined companies’ offerings and expertise to introduce Climate as a Service, a curated portfolio of products and services that allow organizations to align their goals for climate impact with actionable next steps.

With the first retail product certified through CRS’s new Green-e ® Renewable Fuels program, Anew is meeting a rigorous industry standard for quality and transparency in the nascent and fast-growing voluntary biomethane market, helping pave the way for increased participation in this market. The Green-e ® certification program helps build consumer confidence in biomethane as a more-sustainable alternative for commercial fossil natural gas use.

“We’re proud to announce Anew-RFC as the first-ever Green-e ® Renewable Fuels certified retail product,” said Jennifer Martin, executive director of CRS, which administers the Green-e ® program. “Anew-RFC helps provide a more sustainable option for Anew customers, and it meets the most stringent requirements in the industry for quality and transparency. By undergoing independent certification of their sales and supply, Anew is raising the bar for retail renewable fuels products in the voluntary market.”

“As a long-time advocate of renewable natural gas and its power to not only mitigate harmful methane emissions but to displace traditionally sourced, carbon-intensive fossil fuel, we’re proud to be the standard-bearer of the first Green-e ® Renewable Fuels certification,” said Angela Schwarz, CEO of Anew. “Through the Anew-RFC product, we are increasing options for RNG within the marketplace and further establishing RNG as an essential part of the energy transition."

Biomethane is gaining momentum as a solution for customers that want to use fuels with a lower environmental impact and help accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy. The  Green-e ® Renewable Fuels Standard only allows sources of waste with the least harmful environmental impacts, including landfill gas and anaerobic digestion of specific waste feedstocks. CRS verifies the specific fuel production pathways, requires carbon intensity scores that include production impacts and pipeline leakage, and verifies production facilities.

Anew-RFC is a renewable fuel certificate product and does not contain gas. As part of the annual verification process for Green-e ® certification, Anew uses the  M-RETS tracking system , which is the first tracking system for RFCs approved by CRS for the Green-e ® Renewable Fuels program. An RFC represents the environmental benefits of one dekatherm of renewable gas. For each dekatherm of renewable fuel produced, an equivalent RFC is produced, and by purchasing and pairing RFCs with their gas supply, customers are using and receiving the benefits of that renewable fuel. RFC purchases also help build a market for renewable fuels. Increased demand for, and production of, renewable fuels helps avoid fossil natural gas extraction and processing, and helps make use of waste materials.

The Green-e ® certification program for renewable electricity, carbon offsets, and renewable fuels began in 1997 and by 2020 included over 90 million MWh of certified renewable energy. Green-e ® Renewable Fuels was launched by CRS to accelerate the adoption of and drive voluntary market demand for renewable fuels, while ensuring that the gas is from sustainable renewable resources and meets the highest environmental standards. In each Green-e ® program, CRS ensures customers are protected in their purchases and are able to make verifiable usage claims.
